Efficient cleaning of components before the bonding and welding process

Application example: Clean extruded profiles for e-mobility

Components must be thoroughly cleaned before bonding and welding processes to ensure optimum adhesion and a stable bond. Oil, grease, dust or other contaminants must be thoroughly removed. Without prior cleaning, bonded seams or welded joints can lose strength and reliability, which is particularly problematic in safety-critical areas such as the automotive industry.

A major automotive supplier has opted for a customized cleaning solution from BvL Oberflächentechnik GmbH for the production of extruded profiles for electric vehicles.

Background: In electric vehicles, where the combustion engine and its stabilizing function are no longer required, the strength of the body structure plays a central role. In order to ensure the stability and safety of passengers and to protect the battery, long body parts such as extruded profiles made of lightweight materials such as aluminum are increasingly being used.

Practical example for cleaning extruded profiles

For cleaning car body parts up to 2,200 mm long, such as these extruded profiles, the manufacturer relies on the BvL Ocean 1600 RW 2-Tank cleaning system. Thanks to its special useful height and customized workpiece carriers, this system offers optimum conditions for cleaning the components efficiently and precisely. The vertical fixing of the parts and the exact positioning of the areas to be cleaned in the workpiece carrier designed by BvL ensure a consistently high cleaning result.

The aqueous cleaning and drying of the profiles takes place in just one process chamber. Spray cleaning is carried out using a specially arranged nozzle system with a rotating product carrier on a turntable. This is followed by rinsing with demineralized water to remove mineral and cleaning agent residues. All-round drying is ensured by a vertical blow-off nozzle that covers the entire usable height and by the simultaneous rotation of the product carrier. The components are now optimally prepared for further processing. The surface tension for paintability of ≥38 mN/m is reliably achieved. Paint adhesion is guaranteed as long as the system parameters remain stable.

BvL Libelle products for more process reliability

Comprehensive sensors such as the BvL Libelle Fluid Control and Libelle Cleaner Control are used to evaluate and monitor system parameters such as conductivity, pressure and temperature for each batch. The measured values are stored on an integrated data logger. The Libelle products guarantee a high level of quality control and process monitoring.

The BvL Libelle Oil Control Solo measures the surface of parts to ensure that they are suitable for painting after cleaning. The mobile device can be used to quickly decide whether the component is suitable for the subsequent process.
